I’ve recently (3 weeks ago) moved to Pittsburgh and I’m looking for a doctor to help me manage my fibromyalgia. Ive been “diagnosed” since march but 8 years ago saw a doctor who said ” yeah you have it but to officially diagnose you will effectively prevent you from ever getting medical insurance.” I was 17 at the time. The pain finally started to overwhelm me at the beginning of the year and I found a doctor who not only treated it but also suffered from it!
So now I’m looking for a doctor in Pittsburgh who will not look at me like I’m faking, not tell me to take OTC pain relievers ( I’ve taken them and don’t see how they help anyone with fibro at all), and basically just perscribe my maintenence medications. I’ve had thorough bloodwork done recently and have all the test results from that as well as my medical records.
I take 10mg hydrocodone and 350mg carisoprodol at 6am when I get up (one pill each) then I take half a pill every 4 hours starting at 2pm. When I first started I took 1 pill every 8 hours and found I get more relief and less woozy feeling taking half every 4 which my doctor said I could do it either way.
My prescriptions are for 90 each month at 3 per day.
I AM NOT A DRUG ADDICT!
There have been days when for whatever reason (usually forgetting them at home, what kind of an addict forgets their “fix” at home?) I’ve gone without them and feel no withdrawal just pain. These episodes have shown me while the pain is excruitating I am still in control and not being controlled. I am very aware of the tolerance I could potentially build to them but I’ve been taking the same amount since march and experience the same relief.
But my job ( line cook ) requires that I be on my feet 8 hours a day 4 of which is standing in place which is very painful.
I realize at some point I will probably have to do something else ( anyone tried the fibro and fatigue centers?) right now I can’t afford the tests, x-rays, etc etc that many doctors put you through. Any ideas?

what fibro and fatigue center?
basis blood tests often miss things…
sometimes there are even positive results doctors ignore..
the primary treatments for fms are SNRIs like Savella (or combo of other antidepressants) and anti seizure like Lyrica….if a doc never tried that with you–he is an idiot–just like most docs when it comes to fms
many people misdiagnosed with fms suffer needlessly…
often people really have a spinal problem, vitamin deficiency, thyroid issue (even while on meds for it), MS, lymes (look up lyme literate MD), chiari malformation..or one of many other things…that docs don’t do the right tests for…
a new one i just heard if is night shade vegetable allergy…also celiac disease
many people are suffering needlessly because docs don’t look beyond basic blood tests
that being said—there are a few good doctor lists…
i’ve tried a number of those on the list=–they were some of the worst
fibrobetsy has the best…..you should be able to google her–she will take off names if people have bad experiences..whereas others don’t take people off when they die/retire or change their address when they move
